It's Blitz Week

This week is Student Government's annual Blitz Week where we put on events all week to reach out to the student body to better meet their needs.  Monday's event was Carnival with Cabinet.  The weather forced us to change our plans a little bit, but we still met with students outside of Library West and gave away a bunch of free food.  Yesterday was Snacks with Senate in Turlington Plaza.  Today is the SG Exec Meet and Greet in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom Salon A.  I hope you will make a point to stop by as I love talking to students and learning how Student Government can best meet the needs of the student body.  Thursday is Agency day on the Plaza of the Americas, and Friday is SG's first outdoor movie night.

I want to give a special shout out and a BIG thank you to Action SG Chairwoman Sally Cohen and her Action SG Staff.  Sally has been working tirelessly to promote SG events and initiatives all year and is doing a fantastic job with Blitz Week.

State of the Campus Address

At 7:00 on Tuesday, November 19th I will deliver the State of the Campus address in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom.  This event will feature free food, giveaways, and important updates about all the great things that are happening at UF.

There are many people who have accomplished a lot since the beginning of my administration.  I am excited to celebrate all of our achievements and will continue to look for ways to make the Gator experience better.

Guest post from Senate President Cory Yeffet

Today's post is a guest blog from the newly elected Senate President, Cory Yeffet.  I served with Cory during my time in Senate and am fortunate to call him a good friend.  After only a few weeks, Cory is already making a big impact as he leads Student Government's legislative branch.

• Hello Gators!

  My name is Cory Yeffet and I am the President of Student Senate here at the University of Florida. I’m excited to share with you all some updates from the legislative branch of our Student Government!

  Two weeks ago, as the fall elections came to a close, we ushered in a new group of fifty, eager Student Senators! As of last night’s meeting, their Orientation Series is complete and they are fully ready to take on the responsibility of representing the 50,000 students that make up the Gator Nation.

  Some new initiatives that the Senate is working on this semester deal with improving student safety through increased technology and lighting all around campus, as well expanding student services such as bike repair and free printing. In addition, we hope to effectively reach out to all of our constituents through Town Hall Meetings that will be taking place across campus. 

  Furthermore, this semester I hope to lead Student Senate toward making a greater impact on our community. As leaders on campus, we understand it is important not only to represent the students, but also to give back to our surrounding environment. Student Senate will be partaking in community service events throughout the semester, even spearheading some of our own. To start, we will have a fundraising team taking part in Gators March For Babies, taking place this coming November. I encourage all of you to come out and support a great cause as well!

Welcome Back Video

The fall semester is finally upon us. As we get back into the full swing of things, I wanted to share my welcome back video with the entire student body.

Speaking from personal experience, I understand that the beginning of the semester can be a very busy, stressful, yet also fun time. There is a plethora of opportunities available for students to get involved with during this time of year, so don't wait to get involved! I firmly believe that with 900 student organizations there is something out there for everyone, including freshman who are just starting class for the first time. The sooner you find your niche here at UF, the better your overall experience will be.

Some of the organizations and resources I outlined in my video include Greek organizations, the Alumni Association, the Career Resource Center, and Student Government. These are a few great examples of involvement opportunities that can truly enhance your college experience.

Again, I encourage everyone to work hard, get involved in something your passionate about, and have fun while doing it. I hope everyone is having a great start to their semester and is exicted about what the near future has in store! Oh...and don't forget to stay classy, Gators.



Get Involved This Fall

With the Summer session nearing an end, some of you might have already begun thinking about what things you want to do this Fall. While UF offers more than 900 student organizations, containing pre-professional societies, various student unions and several Greek chapters in different councils, I have found that there is no better way to get involved than with Student Government.

Being a part of Student Government has been one of the greatest things I've done with my time at UF. While I started as a member of the Student Senate, during my four years I have been able to work closely with my fellow SG officials and through this, I have learned all about our different agencies, directorships and cabinets and what they have to offer.

Moreover, our Student Government is always adapting to enhance the student experience. I think that is why I have enjoyed being a part of SG; I truly enjoy seeing the projects I have undertaken really help students on this campus that I love!

There are many things you can do to get involved with SG. First, I recommend liking our Facebook page and following our Twitter account. On here you can find postings about open positions as well as events which will allow you to learn more about SG. I also would encourage you to check the SG website regularly. The website is home to all of our applications as well as lists of immediate openings.

If you ever find yourself in the Reitz with some time to kill, feel free to come up and talk to an SG official in person, anyone would be happy to talk to you about what opportunities are available!
