I'm sure I don't have to tell everyone that today is the last day of classes before Spring Break! Many UF students will be traveling during this break, so I wanted to pass along some safety tips:
Driving
If you're taking a road trip for spring break, switch drivers every few hours. "Highway Hypnosis" and driver fatigue are among the leading causes of automobile accidents. For the love of all things holy, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! Call a cab, appoint a designated driver, or get a tow truck to take you and your car to a safe location. It's not worth it and you're too important to take that risk.
Flying
By now most of us are accustomed to TSA's security procedures. Make sure any fluids you take on the plane are less than 3.4 fl oz, check hygiene items like nail clippers and razors, and be aware of your surroundings.
Cruising
Cruises are one of the most popular Spring Break travel options. Remember to stay in groups and watch for suspicious characters. There are people who make a living on the island ports of call preying on vacationers. Watch for pickpockets and keep your wits about you.
International Travel
International travel is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. My mom is from Germany and I've had the opportunity to visit my family in Europe numerous times. Remember that the laws in countries you're visiting are probably different from the laws in the United States. Check the State Department's website for any travel advisories, make a photo copy of your passport, and brush up on the native language if you don't already know it.
Sun
I think the most common Spring Break goal is to get a tan. It's certainly on my list of this to do this week. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays. Whether you're skiing in Colorado, or enjoying the beaches of Cozumel, be sure to lather up. The CDC recommends at least SPF 15 and urges everyone to wear sunglasses with 100% UV ray protection.
Drinking
Everyone wants to have a good time, and many UF students will enjoy an alcoholic beverage or two. There's a Cosmo with my name on it after my last exam today. I want everyone to enjoy their Spring Break, but I also want to see every student back on campus on March 10th. Know your limit. Don't over indulge and stick with friends who will tell you when you've had enough. And again, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!
U Matter, We Care
The Dean of Students Office launched the U Matter, We Care initiative to develop at community of care here at UF. If you or someone you know needs help over Spring Break call the U Matter, We Care help line at 352-294-CARE, visit umatter.ufl.edu or email umatter@ufl.edu there are over 70,000 Gators and not a single one to spare.
Have a great Spring Break and I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus to finish the semester!
